Sally Fitzgibbons is determined to make an impact on her return to the World Surf League’s top tour. The Australian veteran wants to do more than just participate and is looking to find new gears in the Championship Tour (CT) after her strong performances in the Challenger Series (CS) secured her place in the tour. Despite finishing second in the world title race three times, Fitzgibbons has been relegated in the past due to the mid-season cut. However, she has persevered and achieved notable results on the CS, including several second-place finishes and a recent third and two fifths at the Ericeira Pro in Portugal.
Fitzgibbons stated, “I have so many goals; I want to return and improve my performances at the tour locations with the best waves in the world. It’s a mix of emotions; it’s been a long year and you never know what’s coming next. But I’ve stayed focused on my love for competing and showing up. These women are incredibly talented, and it’s challenging to win a heat. It’s truly an honor to be in this position.”
During an interview on the beach, Fitzgibbons became emotional and tearful as she thanked her family and friends for their ongoing support. She expressed, “That belief, after all these years, means so much to me. If it means I return to the tour, everyone has contributed to it. There is so much emotion; I love this sport, love the community, and it’s an honor to still be pursuing it after all this time.”
Compatriots India Robinson (second) and Isabella Nichols (fifth) are also in contention to join Fitzgibbons on the CT, as they have maintained their positions throughout the season. Jacob Willcox (second), the only Australian in the CS men’s top 10, is yet to secure his promotion to the final round.
